Marvine Gaye VS Al Green
Marvin Gaye was one of the best soul singers of our time. He made many best selling hits, including his top of the charts hits “Lets Get It On”, while working for Motown Records from 1960 to 1970. Marvin Gaye grew up singing church music, and for him to come out of that church boy shell to make a hit with sexy lyrics, like the ones written for “Lets Get It On”. Producing his own music, it was a surprise to his family when this sexy, almost over the top track came out. Different than the artist Al Green who had took a completely different route, started to take his music from risky to a more church, or Christian based track selection, or James Brown, who was wild, and coming with action packed full of intensity music. Marvin Gaye choosing to do this would keep him trending with the best of them, and set him apart from other artist. The super sexy vibe, and all around good feeling of the tracks like “Let’s Get It On”, or another well known track “Sexual Healing”, The naughty nature, and grown folks appeal that this track set him apart from other artist like Al Green, because no one else was doing this sort of sex music. Al Green was easing his way into Christian music, and was making songs about getting married, staying together, etc. While the lyrics being written by Gaye seemed to be too much for lots of people, and did not make it easy for Marvin to produce this track. To me Marvin Gaye had a style of writing that set him apart from everyone. He know how to appeal to the adults of his time in more than one way, while to me it seems like other artist were consistently staying in one style, and making the best of it. Marvin Gaye could go from sexy, and smooth, to all business, and keep your attention equally in both styles. This guy has influenced me greatly while listening to his music. I have learned that you do not have to stick to one style, or one demographic for your audience. If you have the ability to go from sexy to real, go for it. There are no limitations on an artist with these types of abilities, and I strive on a daily basis to be half as good as the guys I have spoken about in this blog. Al Green was a great artist, and had a similar style to Marvin Gaye, but to me Marvin was just able to use his voice and writing ability more than Al Green who to me was more stuck on a one way track.
